Wiideo Centre
Works great for the videos from my cameras. Unfortunately MythTV videos need re-transcoding for audio.

google browser on olpc
on the XO-1, running google chrome 4.0.249.30
not installed, just running from the unpacked rpm;
had to manually rename some libraries with 1d or 0d
so far seems ok; perhaps a bit faster than the default...
...p.s...
do NOT try google wave ... that takes up too much memory, and locked up the machine!

Opera oddness on windows;
now, the DSi uses a mini Opera browser, and I can access gmail and blogger there; and on Linux, also no problem.
but recent versions on windows seem not to like the google authentication.
hmmmm.
Now looking at some of the new features of Opera 10.10, and the peer to peer file sharing looks interesting;
is Opera also getting into the game of "my browser is an OS", but instead, (showing my JEE background)
more like "my browser is an AppServer" ?

dsi blogging
entry from a dsi, using the opera browser.
single column mode works well.
do need to be careful not to hit enter too soon.

iMac G3 still alive; update to Fedora 12?
Haven't mentioned the old G3 in a while;
keeps on running edubuntu with the replacement 6Gig HD...
Is off the net right now, but keeps on running Tuxpaint and playing music.
(borrowed the cable for another system)
Now is a chess opponent too.
does seem to take up a lot of space on the shelf these days;
Interesting historical note: it does NOT have a fan, so it is still one of the quietest systems in the house.
Guess we'll keep it for a little while longer.

olpc XO-1 + mythTV
playing mythTV recorded shows; with a bit of transcoding;
initial files play full screen, but no sound; needed to re-encode with different audio codec, and then drop the frame rate to make playable.
but they are quite playable!
1 hr of David Suzuki: Nature of Things, easily fits on a 2G usb key.
now wondering if I could use the olpc directly for the mythTV box...

Kids browsers working on Linux?!
much to my surprise
kidoz and kidzui both work on my Fedora 10 box!
My guess is due to their mac versions also working on linux:
firefox plugins, and adobe AIR both run...
neat!
not sure if I'd actually use either of these, they seem a bit cluttered.

Reassuring/Disconcerting service
new power adapter for DSL modem arrived.
Was the old one dangerous, or are they just being nice?
Should I move my modem to a metal/stone shelf unit, away from all flammable materials?

bad Karma on older laptop?
I too had some difficulties upgrading my ubuntu to 9.10
on an older laptop wubi install;
did kill the install; Kernel panic on restart....
on the fresh install, also didn't quite get the screen setup correctly.
Fortunately wubi installs all go into a big disk file, so I have a copy of that on an external drive, with all my config settings.
Then did a fresh, clean install, and copied back my data.
One thing I found not working the way it used to was the microsoft VPN;
the commandline works, but the gui didn't work out of box, like it did last time.

XO cloud control?
running solaris, from the XO via amazon aws.
not quite perfect; the default amazon web control panel is a bit too big for the screen, but is just usable.
did not try the java command line utils.

k6 on ubuntu 8.04-2
finally updated the old k6
running xubuntu 8.04, with additions;
unfortunately not quite perfect;
changed internal sound card to one xubuntu does not seem to like.
is pci rather than the old isa one, so should be pnp...
(slax found it ok)
also does not poweroff correctly, or xset +dpms properly;
oh well...
lets me use the vpn.

XO bean sprouts
got a webcam program running, pointing at our bean sprouts.
using:
fswebcam-20070108-1.i386.rpm
manually extracted onto a usb key;
did need to also extract one library:
gd-2.0.35-5.fc9.i386.rpm
working like a charm:
#!/bin/sh
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH={above lib on usb key also}
MYDATE=`date +20%y%m%d%H%M%S`
fswebcam --verbose --no-banner --no-timestamp --save tw_$MYDATE.jpg

Sugar on Fedora 10
Finally got around to updating kpc to Fedora 10
and running sugar-emulator !
so have sugar running on the downstairs system, and the upstairs actual XO laptop.
is bigger, brighter and faster on the kpc, but a bit less stable;
not everything works.
